Who is Aunt Ducks?
Cheryl Rogers came to clay art after 20 years in design. She seamlessly transitioned from fashion design to functional pottery design.
In the early days, this California girl made dress patterns for pom-pom girls’ costumes and designed children’s clothing. Today, she creates patterns for one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces that are beautiful and useful. As in her previous life as a fashion designer, each piece is carefully engineered to achieve the right fit.
In the world of clay, Cheryl, known as Aunt Ducks, constructs her work with precision and humor. A plain container might have a wavy pink ruffle or a silly lid handle. A salad bowl might have a school of fish circling its rim. Two puzzle pieces might come together to form double condiment bowls. This artist celebrates color. Her color palettes can be subtle but are often bright, happy, and playful.
Cheryl, who loves to keep busy, has given serious attention to the science side of pottery. Every glaze, underglaze, and clay type she uses has been studied and tested before being used on a project.
Cheryl is still stitching together colors and forming textures. Although the fabric may have changed from cotton to clay, her talent, skill, and imagination are evident in her work.
